Andy WarholAndy Warhol (August 6, 1928 - February 22, 1987) was an American painter, filmmaker, publisher, and a major figure in the pop art movement.

Warhol was born Andrew Warhola in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States, to immigrants of Ruthenian ethnicity from the village of Mikova, Austria-Hungary (northeast Slovakia) . He showed early artistic talent, and studied commercial art at the Carnegie Institute of Technology (now known as Carnegie Mellon University) in Pittsburgh. Upon graduating in 1949, he moved to New York City and began a successful career in magazine illustration and advertising. He became well-known mainly for his whimsical ink drawings of shoes done in a loose, blotted style.
